Best Herbs For Anxiety

Anxiety is very prevalent today amongst women and it is definitely a multi-faceted approach to help it calm down.

I do want to preface this post with this:

Anxiety is a human emotion and it’s not necessarily something to get rid of.  Everyone has anxiety – some more than others. We are fearful and scared to feel emotions and anxiety is one of the most physically uncomfortable one to feel.

You are feeling adrenaline running through your system when you feel he physical symptoms of anxiety such as tingling, breathing rapidly, dizziness, urinating more, jitteriness and heat.

I always go back to this quote when I have anxiety. “What we resist will persist.”

That means that when you wonder to yourself “why am I having this?” “is it going to be okay?” “what is wrong with me?” “what can I do to get rid of this feeling?,” you are actually encouraging it to stay.

My best advice to you when you are having anxiety is to simply accept that you are anxious.  Be confident that it will go away and sometimes it even helps to remind yourself what you are feeling is just adrenaline because your body feeling unsafe for some reason.

With all that said, there are herbs we can use to help keep your nervous system in a more calm space if anxiety is common for you.

Herbs for Anxiety

  • Adaptogenic herbs.  I use this class of herbs regularly because it helps to regulate your stress response.  Rhodiola is a calming herb that can be purchased as a single herb or in a blend with other herbs.
  • Designs for Health Neurocalm. This supplement is designed to promote activity of GABA and serotonin (neurotransmitters), which may help support healthy mood, cravings, and feelings of calm, satiety, and satisfaction.
  • Designs for Health CatecholaCalm.   This designed to support healthy catecholamine levels (neurotransmitters) with adaptogenic herbs and nutrients that may help mood and promote calmness and relaxation. This formulation addresses adrenal gland health, which may help people handle stress more effectively.
  • Integrative Therapeutics Lavela WS 1265. This supplement is a type of lavender essential oil that can be taken internally.  It promotes relaxation and calm nervousness, as demonstrated in controlled trials published in peer-reviewed medical journals.
  • Magnesium. I prefer to use magnesium glycinate or magnesium oxide as the form because it’s better absorbed into the body.  Magnesium is helpful for overall relaxation.

These are my favorite products to recommend to my patients who are feeling hyper-vigilant and have high levels of anxiety.  Like I mentioned earlier, I think they can dramatically help, but there is also personal development and healing work to be done when we are dealing with anxiety.  In Heal Your Hormones Masterclass, we go in-depth with all the strategies and mindset shifts that can be helpful when overcoming frequent anxiety for good.
