My Fitness Lately

Happy hump day!

I want to get this back to being a blog with some fitness sprinkled in, so today we’re going to talk about my fitness lately.

All smiles after a great workout! (Sorry about the sweat)
All smiles after a great workout! (Sorry about the sweat)

Since I got pregnant, I’m going to be honest, the fitness content has been a bit low, but now that I’m back in the swing of things consistently and doing lots of different workouts, I think it’s time.

I can no longer rely on breastfeeding as an exercise session as Aiden is slowly weaning himself (we’re at about 2-3 per day and then the nighttime 2-3).  That actually sounds like a lot still, but it’s significantly less and I am no longer dropping weight just from that.  I’ve hit a plateau.

My Favorite Workouts Right Now

Spinning Classes: I’ve taken these for the last 15+ years off and on.  I really have quite the love-hate relationship with them, but right now, I’m loving them.  They get me some mommy time at the gym, they push me harder than I would myself and they work on muscular strength and endurance.  My heart rate is high the entire 60 minutes and I know there’s some good fat burning going on!  You never can fully trust the calorie counters on machines if you don’t input your personal information, but I know I got some serious calorie torching anyways.

(Sorry for the bad picture – spinning classes are done with the lights off)

T-25 Workouts: I’ve talked about this a few times on the blog (here, here and here).  I love them.  They afford me the ability to workout quickly and intensely while Aiden is playing near me, so I don’t have to waste his 1 nap time now because they are 25 minutes long.  I did the Insanity workout two different times a few years ago and honestly got the most toned I’ve ever been (and I ran marathons).  There are no weights required!  Since it’s only 25 minutes, I can’t justify not getting in workouts anymore.

Fitbit Flex: This isn’t a workout, but it’s my favorite workout tool.  I look at that thing all day to track my steps and make sure I get the recommended 10,000 steps per day.  The one thing that I don’t like so much is that when I take a spinning class or do the T-25 workout, it obviously doesn’t track that, so it looks like my steps are fewer for the day even though I did workout.  It’ll be wonderful when I’m running more!  I also find that it’s really hard to get it to register your active minutes.  When I’m in spinning, I know my heart rate is 85% of my max because I track it and usually it’ll say like 1-2 active minutes.  It also tracks sleep which is just depressing at this point because it says that I’m restless like 40x and awake about 35x.  Oh the joys…  You can also track your food and water consumption which I haven’t done, but need to!  I wasn’t contacted to do a review for Fitbit – this is just something that I love!
Running: I have run a few times, but I keep having nagging injuries come up when I run.  I really have high hopes to train for a half marathon this summer.  My body just feels different when I run now after having a baby… I pray someday this will go away and I’ll feel like my old self.
I also did the barre class last week and plan on getting a DVD for that too!  I love getting a variety of workouts in.  I don’t get bored and look forward to new stuff all the time.  I also have a friend that goes to spinning with me occasionally, so that’s fun too!
Moms – Did your body feel good running after you had a baby?
What’s your favorite workout been lately?

  1. Great job at getting back into your workouts! I think it’s important to find something you like and go for it. My body felt pretty good with running after I had Hunter, but I’ve heard plenty of moms say otherwise. I think it just depends on how your body did with childbirth. I would also recommend working on your core and strength before you get back into running. It may help decrease injury and will help your body feel stronger. 🙂
