While this was my first pregnancy, I am already a mom to 2 amazing boys (ages 13 and . As I prepared for my 1st baby, my only plan was to have an epidural and a healthy baby boy at the end of the day.
A week before my due date, I woke with up contractions at 1am that were 6-10 minutes apart and uncomfortable. I did laundry, showered, and cleaned the kitchen to stay busy. But by 8am the contractions had slowed down to 15-20 minutes apart and continued like that the remainder of the day. I lost my mucous plug in the afternoon and my husband figured we would be meeting our baby in the next day or two. My mom decided to come to Denver incase I went into Labor in the middle of the night, she would be here to stay with the older boys. My husband cooked a wonderful dinner and the neighbor kids came over for dinner. After diner, I was sitting on the couch with my husband and suddenly jumped up and said, “Well this isn’t normalâ€â€¦my water had just broke! It was 8:40pm. I took a quick shower to rinse off and we were headed to the hospital by 8:55. (My mom arrived at our house at 9:15, so we didn’t have to worry about the boys – perfect timing).
Contractions in the car started coming every couple of minutes and were very intense. We arrived at the hospital and pulled into the ER loop and went inside. My husband said he would get me checked in and then go move the car and bring in all of our stuff. I was immediately taken up to the labor and delivery floor and placed in an observation room around 9:20pm. I requested that an epidural be started ASAP, as I wasn’t prepared for hours of these intense contractions. The nurse checked and I was already at 10cm. The anesthesiologist came in the room and had me sit up on the edge of the bed to start the epidural. When I sat up, I immediately felt as though the baby was coming and laid back down. The nurse checked and sure enough, the baby was already crowning. No time for an epidural, no time for an IV for fluids or meds, no time to move into a delivery room. Nurses rushed to bring equipment into the room & my doctor arrived just as I started to push. After 4 big pushes, we welcomed our beautiful baby boy into our arms at 10:04 pm. Campbell was 6 pounds 11 ounces, 19 inches long and completely perfect!
Everything happened so quickly that after loving on Campbell for a few minutes, my husband went and gathered things from our car & filled out the admission paperwork. Although Campbell came much quicker than expected & there was no time for an epidural, I wouldn’t change anything about his delivery! It was an experience we will never forget & we are so blessed to now have 3 wonderful boys!
