Three Months Old!

Dear Aiden,

We’ve unfortunately reached that point where we are no longer really counting the weeks, but now the months. You’ve reached 3 months old and what a big boy you are!

I can’t help but feel a little sad that you are no longer considered a newborn, but now a baby.  Thankfully, the “baby” phase lasts a little longer.  I thought back to the day you were born today and I can’t believe that was three months ago.  In some ways, it feels like yesterday and in other ways it feels like we’ve known each other for a lot longer.  We are now in a whole other season too.  It was snowing the day you were born and now it was 90 degrees yesterday.  What a whirlwind nonetheless.  No other three months in my life have gone by this quickly.

You are developing quite the little personality.  It shines through more and more each week.  You are stubborn, determined, independent, yet dependent and calm.  You know what you want and when you want it and you’re determined to get it.  Thankfully, I usually know exactly what you want.  It changes between food, diaper changed or wanting to play or being tired.  You are a major “sleep fighter” though.  Heaven forbid you miss something.

You are more smiley by the day I think.  You love when daddy and I play with your legs and sing to you.  You just smile your little heart out.  This is definitely my favorite thing to do with you and I think it’s daddy’s too.

We didn’t weigh you this week but I would guess that you’re about 14 lbs. now.  This is just 2 lbs. from double your birth weight.  When I look at your little rolls all over your body, I feel proud that exclusively feeding you breast milk has done this for you.  Throughout the ups and downs of breastfeeding, I have determined that I love it.  I love the bonding with you and I love that I am able to sustain your life in the healthiest way possible.

I really feel like around the 12-13 week mark, life started to make more sense for us.  I don’t know how else to explain it, but things just sort of felt like they fell into place.  In the first weeks of life, sometimes things were frustrating probably due to my extreme exhaustion, but now I feel like I’m able to function each day.  With your development, I now know more about how you’re feeling (like when you’re smiling) and how to comfort you better.

Sleeping is still and up and down issue, but overall, it’s much better.  You are sleeping about 3.5-4 hours in the first stretch of sleep for the night and then 4-5 hours off and on throughout the night.  You are still sleeping primarily in the rock n’ play, but then in the wee hours of the morning, you come into bed with me mostly because I fall asleep while you’re nursing.  We are starting (and I use that term extremely loosely) to figure out a nap pattern too.  You like to sleep sometime in the morning and then sometime in the afternoon and that’s about all we have figured out, but it’s starting to form a bit of a pattern.  Things have a way of working themselves out.

You are constantly exploring your new world by looking around and now using your hands quite a bit.  Just this last week you really started figuring out what your hands are useful for.  You are completely over laying down during the day and getting over sitting down; you like to stand up in either dad or my arms.  Grandma bought you a Baby Bjorn bouncy chair that have a bar full of spinning toys in front of it.  You love sitting in this looking around and spinning the toys.  It is the perfect thing for you.

You have really started getting more mobile in the past week also!  You are using your legs to push yourself around and army crawl a little bit on your stomach.  Today during our three month photo shoot, I put you on your stomach and you rolled onto your back!  You have found your feet with your hands also.

We both love our outings each day.  We love taking Otis to the dog park and walking/running around there.  You still fall asleep nearly every time we start walking.  I’ll just keep taking you places so you can see new surroundings when you wake up.

This month we are going to start a bedtime routine so hopefully that will help you be able to fall asleep faster and easier eventually.  I’ve read and read and ask friends for advice and that’s what they all say, so here’s to that…

Each day I love spending the day with you more and more.  We have so much fun together learning and exploring.  You’ve taught me more stuff about myself than I can count and I love learning more about your personality too.  Here’s to another month of growing and changing!

I won’t be doing the weekly updates anymore.  We are going to change to monthly updates!

Love, Mommy
